Bookcase Upgrade with Peel and Stick Wallpaper

This is an easy DIY you can start and finish in one nap time! I don’t know about you, but with two kids under five that kind of project is my jam right now. Especially after recently completing a DIY pantry build which took more hours than I’d like to count. It’s also a great project if you’ve been wanting to try out wallpaper but are nervous about committing to a full wall or room. Alright, so here’s what you need to know for this beginner DIY with big impact:

IKEA Billy Bookcase Update with Wallpaper

This is truly an IKEA hack for the Billy bookcase. We started with an old one that has served us well. But in my daughter’s room, I saw an opportunity to add some fun with color and pattern. This peel and stick wallpaper through Tempaper was just the ticket!

Peel and Stick Wallpaper Supplies

The supply list is pretty simple. Since Tempaper is peel and stick, there is no need for glue or paste of any sort. The paper also comes with a smoothing tool, so beyond that you’ll just want to have a basic razor for trimming edges, something for cutting the paper length (scissors can do the trick), measuring tape and a level (not pictured.)

I used this handy wallpaper tool kit for this project and the pantry as well.

Easy Wallpaper Application

I’ve coined myself an “impatient perfectionist” which I think you’ll agree is a terrible pairing of traits. Fortunately, wallpaper (of all kinds) is actually pretty forgiving in my experience. (I mean it!) Just make sure to give yourself at least a few inches on the top and bottom to shift as needed, and take the time to patiently line up your seams. I found it best to start from a top corner and slowly progress outward, smoothing from there. I recommend only removing the paper backing from a few feet at a time until you’re sure you’ve got everything lined up.

You can see more of the peel and stick installation process here.

The Perfect Neutral Floral Wallpaper

Floral wallpaper can go bold in a hurry. But in this space I think the grey, white and deep gold tones work as neutrals. This is important when the shelves are packed with colorful books and favorite trinkets over the years. The paper is part of Tempaper’s Novogratz line and like all things the Novogratz family creates, it’s fun, hip and should continue to suit our daughter’s style as she grows.

Wallpapered Bookcase

Here she is, fully stocked! Now, allow me to be cheesy for a moment:
Like the letter board says, “Don’t be like the rest of them, darling.” Instead, slap some wallpaper up in a space where it will bring you joy. And if some day you don’t like it? Guess what - it peels right off.
