<image:caption>I swear, I’m all about DIY shelving – (I built the shelves in our fancy pantry and love how they turned out!) – but I wanted to do something extra special for the bar space. Brass and glass hanging cafe shelves can be spotted in many high-end bars and boutique hotels and they really level up a home bar (or kitchen!) Iron Abode gifted two of their Riviera Glass Units for the space and I was absolutely blown away by the custom, handcrafted quality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Ways to Elevate a Basement Bar</image:title>
<image:caption>I might argue that a bar backsplash is even more important than a kitchen backsplash. Why? In most layouts, you’re facing the bar backsplash the whole time you’re in the space! That means you should choose a backsplash that makes the view enjoyable. I did DIY mirror antiquing to make a statement as the backdrop for our bar. Bonus: it was super affordable and is easy to take down and swap out if I ever tire of it. I saved the process and materials in my Instagram stories highlights here. Be sure to let me know if you give it a try!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We had the basement finished as part of our home build, meaning the drywall and floors were complete and the plumbing and electric were roughed in for the bar. Other than that, the space was a blank canvas.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Basement Renovation Reveal - MODERN SPEAKEASY BAR DESIGN</image:title>
<image:caption>I knew I wanted a speakeasy / art deco vibe in the bar space. It was a chance to step outside of my normal design comfort zone and lean into deep colors, warm metals and dark wood tones. I wanted it to feel elevated beyond the typical home bar so it would really feel like a special escape or a boutique hotel bar.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Basement Renovation Reveal - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>BASEMENT LOUNGE DESIGN I wanted to continue the elevated vibe and rich tones into the lounge space, but I wasn’t quite ready to paint the entire basement dark. So I carried the Farrow & Ball Hague Blue over to the back wall as an accent. An extra wide DIY electric fireplace was always on my list of mandatories. As for the furniture and decor, it was a fun exploration of high quality pieces and family-friendly fabrics that could withstand nacho cheese spills and still look sexy. In keeping with the trend of designing outside my comfort zone, I challenged myself to use playful pattern, brass metals — oh and velvet (for the first time!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Basement Renovation Reveal - Tin Ceiling & Hanging Brass Cafe Shelves</image:title>
<image:caption>When I think of a speakeasy design, I think of tin ceilings. American Tin Ceilings provided the most beautiful, handmade tiles for our space and I love how the design is both modern and classic. My husband and I installed the whole ceiling in just a few hours! Chic hanging shelves were one of the first items in my design plan for the bar. They were a feature in every snazzy boutique hotel bar I had saved to my mood board and they totally take the space to a level above the typical home DIY. Iron Abode gifted two of their Riviera Glass Units to make the dream a reality. I cannot say enough about the handcrafted, custom quality of these American-made shelves. I kept repeating, “Wow… wow!” to myself as I unboxed and installed them (which was easy-peasy!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Basement Renovation Reveal - Black Sink & Modern Faucet</image:title>
<image:caption>A black sink was a no-brainer in this design. I went with a full sink instead of a smaller bar sink to make party hosting and clean up extra easy! I also opted for a drop-in style to make the installation easier on myself since I was cutting the hole in the countertop on my own. BLANCO provided their SILGRANIT DIAMOND 1 3⁄4 Dual-Mount sink in Anthracite to flow with the bar design. I love that BLANCO’s faucet finishes match perfectly with their sinks to create a BLANCO UNIT. Ours is the URBENA in Chrome/Anthracite for a sleek, color-coordinated look!</image:caption>

<image:caption>DIY Electric Fireplace A DIY electric fireplace was always on my wish list for the basement. I am so happy with how it turned out! Dimplex gifted their Ignite Linear Fireplace XLF60 insert for the space and we couldn’t be happier with the unit. It was super easy to install and the flame is stunning! I used Portola Paints roman clay to give the fireplace a concrete look.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The elevated midcentury modern wall sconces and floor lamp from Blueprint Lighting really added a special vibe to the basement lounge space. I had fun playing with tone-on-tone in the wall color and velvet furniture pieces. And I really love how the squiggly organic designs on the Justina Blakeney Loloi Rug plays off of the Minted x West Elm ottomans and the abstract Minted art. I’m so happy with how this space turned out and can’t wait to enjoy it with family and friends.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It looks a little wild right now because the final lighting isn’t in and there’s a big white space where the antiqued mirrors will go, so let me remind you of where we’re headed by bringing back the plan design to reference.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Bar - Part 3 - THE PAINT COLOR: FARROW & BALL HAGUE BLUE</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been wanting to try out Farrow & Ball paints forever. They’re known for incredible quality and a depth of color that few other paint brands have been able to achieve. I wanted to make this bar nook feel extra cozy and deep, so I opted for a rich, dark color: Hague Blue. (gifted) So far just one coat almost completely covered the white space! Because the formula is such high quality, I will only need to do touch ups in a few areas rather than an entire second coat. Yes! (I need all the time-saving tricks I can get right now.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Bar - Part 3 - BLACK STAINED DIY BAR</image:title>
<image:caption>For background on how I built the bar, hop back here. As for finishing it, I wanted to stain it black to match the IKEA cabinets I used for the wet bar area. The IKEA cabinet fronts show a bit of wood grain which is why I opted for stain instead of paint. I ended up trying Varathane Poly+Stain in Black. (Again, looking to save time by combining the two steps into one.) I was a little nervous when I realized how thick and sticky the stuff is. But with a light sanding between two coats, it turned out just right!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Bar - Part 3 - DIY ANTIQUE MIRROR</image:title>
<image:caption>I also got to work on one of the projects I’ve been excited to try: learning how to antique a mirror. Filling a whole backsplash with real antique mirrors would come with a hefty price tag. So I gave DIY a try with a few simple supplies. (And it totally worked!) I plan to finish the rest of the mirrors this week and write a blog post on the process later on. For now, you can get all the details in the “Antique Mirror” highlight on my Instagram page!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once the antique mirrors are installed, I’m so excited to add the most chic glass shelves with an aged brass finish. These are being custom hand-made and gifted by Iron Abode. I chose the Riviera style which I think will really help boost the speakeasy vibes!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Bar - Part 2 - BAR DESIGN INSPIRATION</image:title>
<image:caption>Last week, Pinterest served me this photo of the bar at Death & Co in Denver. (Photo by Adam Szafranski) And I was like HOLY CRAP! THAT’S WHAT’S BEEN IN MY HEAD! The colors, the vibe… It’s what I’ve been working toward in this space but hadn’t found a great reference. Until now! Okay, obviously this incredible venue is 10x the size of our basement (with sky-high ceilings). But the walls are almost the same color I’ll be using and the dark bar with mirrors were also already part of the plans. Check, check, check. Then I noticed the trim detail on the bar. Ah ha! I hadn’t been able to decide what to do on the bar front. The classic square trim used here was the perfect answer. I’d actually done a wall in this style in our old house so I was comfortable recreating it on a small scale.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Bar - Part 1 - The framing of the DIY bar is done! And oh boy, she’s a big one. 10.5ft long, in fact. I enjoy this kind of building. Once you have the plan, it’s just methodical. But designing the plan – figuring out the exact measurements of each cut and the lumber lengths to buy to achieve those cuts… that’s my least favorite part. And that, of course, is where I had to start.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - Wallpaper Pantry Design Board</image:title>
<image:caption>I knew I wanted to try wallpaper. I hadn’t installed it before but adored it in many other spaces. My final basic pantry design plan looked like this. (Spoiler alert: The finished space looks pretty close!) I planned for moody blue/gray painted shelves throughout, a row of drawers, and a wood countertop.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f7b76419448424d00ccd379/1616903010272-NEKJAP2GBLO16Y5ZZEC4/blue+kitchen+cabinets.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - Continuing the Blue-Gray Cabinet Color</image:title>
<image:caption>You can see the door to our pantry peeking in from the left of this photo. Because of the location I wanted the pantry design to complement our kitchen so I used the same cabinet paint color. This is Sherwin Williams Grays Harbor.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f7b76419448424d00ccd379/1616904414811-LR77TSZKGHCBOVY6ISYG/diy+pantry+shelves.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - DIY Floating Pantry Shelves</image:title>
<image:caption>I figured out my measurements (more on that below!) and had a couple large sheets of pre-sanded plywood ripped down at Home Depot. (This is such a great time saver - and helpful if you’re like me and don’t own a table saw!) So I only had to do tiny adjustments to each shelf (using my hand-me-down jigsaw) for a perfect fit at home. I used 1x2s screwed into studs to create cleats which support the shelves. I also added a few brackets for support in areas that needed them. You can find more detailed videos of this in my “Pantry” highlights on instagram @onesmithstory. I also used my kregjig to attach the shelf boards where they meet near the corner for extra stability. As you can see - they turned out quite sturdy! Then I used my brad nailer to secure the shelf to the cleat around the back edges.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - Creating a Custom Look</image:title>
<image:caption>I wanted the lower half of the pantry to feel kind of like cabinets even though it was actually open shelving. To achieve this, I made the lower shelves deeper than the uppers and painted the lower shelves and drawers (I’ll get to those next) all the same color as our kitchen cabinetry. Paint type matters for this project! I used Sherwin Williams ProClassic Interior Acrylic Latex Enamel paint in Semi-Gloss. Why? It’s what our painters used on the pantry door. It’s made for trim and cabinetry and the enamel finish makes it durable. It’s not meant for walls, but I used it on the walls of this space as well with no issues. Bonus: no need to do a sealant coat of any kind! I’d caution against using basic wall paint on shelves in a space like this where they’ll see lots of wear and tear. Don’t forget to caulk all of our seams with paintable caulk! This drip-free caulk gun is totally worth the couple extra bucks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - IKEA Ivar Drawer Hack</image:title>
<image:caption>My original plan for this pantry was to use the IKEA Ivar system. Ultimately, I decided to go a more custom route, but I did see some potential with incorporating the Ivar drawers. They simply attach below any shelf (of accommodating measurements) and are super versatile. Check out those cute labels! I wanted them to blend in for the cabinet-like look I mentioned above, so before assembling them I painted them with a quality primer and then the same Sherwin Williams enamel paint listed above. Bam! Easy drawers in a matter of minutes. (Keep an eye out for them in the reveal photos!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - Skim Coating Textured Walls for Wallpaper</image:title>
<image:caption>Our walls have a “sand” texture, which, while pretty minimal, could still be a problem for wallpaper. I wanted to be sure the wallpaper installation would go as smoothly as possible, so I used joint compound to “skim coat” and smooth out the walls before applying the paper. Here’s what I used: Dust control joint compound Joint compound mixer attachment for drill Magic Trowel (this is a game changer and the real secret to a good skim coat) Sturdy paint tray 3/4in nap roller Spray bottle for water Sponge for “sanding” the compound once dried You can see my skim coat process in my Instagram stories here (Just tap through the “Pantry Pt2” stories and you’ll see it!) <image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - Pantry Wallpaper from Milton & King</image:title>
<image:caption>I considered a lot of wallpaper sources and designs for this little space. Peel and stick or paste? Geometric or floral? (I asked some friends to weigh in and even they had a hard time choosing a side!) Ultimately, the winning selection was this playful Milton & King print called “Mimosa” in the Tranquil Crop colorway. The colors matched our kitchen cabinets so well it was like it was meant to be. And I love that the wheat and berries theme feels appropriate for a pantry. It is a paste wallpaper and I was nervous about the application process but I followed their instructions and watched the helpful videos and felt confident I could do it. Milton & King was kind enough to supply the paper for this space and I would happily use their products again! Oh, also, their customer service was next level. (No, they aren’t paying me to say this!) Fun fact: I had studied abroad in Australia for a semester in college and fell in love with the playful, friendly vibe of the culture. When I learned Milton & King was an Australian company, I knew they’d be great. Sure enough, the packaging, communication and product exceeded my expectations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - DIY Pantry with Moody Wallpaper - Milton & King Pasted Wallpaper Installation</image:title>
<image:caption>Milton & King does pasted wallpaper a little different from most other brands I’m familiar with. A lot of other paste paper brands come pre-pasted OR the instructions tell you to put the paste on the paper and then apply the giant length of sticky paper to the wall. Sounds messy, right? Milton & King, on the other hand, has you roll paste onto the wall and then apply the paper. This just makes a lot more sense to me than trying to wrangle massive sheet of sticky paper! I also liked that this method made it easy for me to slide and adjust the paper to line things up perfectly. It was all very forgiving. You can see the quick wallpaper application process in this reel. I used this simple wallpaper application tool kit and this exact paste for the job.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DIY Headboard Let’s start with this DIY headboard. In my last update I shared that I was painting lots and lots of wood ball halves to create the DIY Jenny Lind bed vibe with a boho flair. I attached them to the painted plywood backing with Gorilla Glue and added the natural reed pieces to add the dainty arcs in between. To secure the headboard to the wall, I used my favorite trick for hanging large items: a french cleat. It’s super easy to install and this particular one can hold 150 lbs!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Reveal | Girl’s Boho Bedroom - Boho Swing Chair & Flower Wall</image:title>
<image:caption>This sweet little corner might be my favorite part of the room. I pivoted from my original plans and swapped the hammock swing for this boho hanging chair. (Our wild little ones were bumping the wall with the hammock’s bar so this was a better option for a corner.) I used glass beaker wall vases to hang dried wildflowers we picked from our land and these glass hanging vases to propagate clippings from our pothos. I love that the flowers look like they’re floating! I also added a cute yellow storage ottoman for blankets, toys and books. It holds a surprising amount and is great for quick clean-up!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 5 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - Start with Plywood & Wood Ball Halves</image:title>
<image:caption>I began with a 4’x8’ piece of thin, sanded plywood for my backing. I chose thin because I planned to paint it to blend in with the wall. Then cut the arch out using the tried-and-true method of cutting a string half the width of the desired headboard, affixing one end to the bottom-center of the board, tying the other end to a pencil, then pulling the string tight and tracing the arc. You can see video steps in my Instagram story highlights!</image:caption>

She, like the majority of voters, picked the top option with four lines of beads. Though, I may still explore an option that uses three and split the difference!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 5 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - Painting</image:title>
<image:caption>Once I saw how lovely the beads looked in their raw wood glory, I debated leaving them that way and skipping the paint. I asked for votes in Instagram once again and this poll was pretty close but green won out. My husband and son also picked green, so I got to work painting! I finished a first coat on all 160+ of them, and hope to get a second coat in early this week. Later this week I’ll be experimenting with using natural reed or willow to add texture and warmth to the spaces between the beads. Stay tuned and follow on Instagram for progress!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 4 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - Week four of One Room Challenge has been a lot of brainstorming for the DIY headboard. Sharing a first draft of the plan and inspiration below!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 4 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - The Original Inspiration</image:title>
<image:caption>If you recall from the toddler girl’s boho room mood board, I shared this headboard as inspiration for my DIY plans. I love the texture and pop of green.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 4 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - A Fresh Spin</image:title>
<image:caption>While I really like the original reference, I’ve been determined to put my own spin on the DIY and create something I hadn’t seen yet. I had planned to utilize round reed and/or willow (my mom is a basket weaver) but couldn’t figure out a plan that felt quite right. Then I saw these two projects from @caseymason_ and @panelsofmyhome and the lightbulb went on! Using wood balls to give a bit of a Jenny Lind vibe felt just right.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 4 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - Current Plan</image:title>
<image:caption>My current plan is to start with a plywood sheet and cut out my frame to use as the backing for the arch (similar to how @jessiegirlhome did with her DIY headboard). This will serve to support the wood ball halves which I’ll use to cover the plywood like @caseymason_’s mirror above. I plan to paint the balls a pretty green tone and add round reed or willow arches in between (as you can maybe comprehend from my silly scribble). I may have to adjust plans once I get a feel for the sturdiness of this design, but I’m eager to get started! The supplies should be arriving in the next couple days!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Room Challenge | Week 3 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom - Completed: Stain and Assemble Big Girl Bed</image:title>
<image:caption>Last week I shared the toddler girl’s boho room mood board and mentioned that I was working on sanding down her big girl bed to stain it a different color. I loved the original warm tones of the bed, but it clashed with the light grey tones in the floor. It took a bit of experimenting but I think I landed on the perfect shade for the space. I also have to say, I was SO impressed by the quality of this bed. It’s solid wood, was super easy to assemble, and I had purchased it during a sale for less than $150! Definitely one to bookmark!</image:caption>
